Carroll: A New York Winter Olympics Will Bring the World to Upstate and Downstate

New York, NY Assemblymember Robert Carroll released the following statement following Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement that she will seek to bring the Winter Olympics to New York for the first time since 1980.

“Governor Kathy Hochul just took the first real step toward a dream I have carried for years, a Winter Olympics shared by New York City and Lake Placid. We often experience winter as a season to endure; this is our chance to make it one to anticipate, a stage that brings the world to both halves of our state, two regions proving they thrive together. I have made this case for years, through a white paper, op-eds in the Daily News and USA Today, legislation to train Team USA athletes here at home and a trip to Milan and Cortina to study how two distant cities host a single Games. Milan and Cortina proved the model can work; New York City and Lake Placid will perfect it.

None of this would be possible without Governor Hochul, whose steady investments in modernizing Lake Placid's Olympic facilities and strengthening our transit have carried us to this moment. I am grateful for her leadership, and I am ready to keep working with her to build what comes next.”

Assemblymember Carroll has been a strong advocate for culture and sports helping to secure millions in state funding for organizations across New York State. He recently introduced the “Sporting Event Promotion Act” (A.10105) which will keep New York competitive with other states by providing sales tax exemptions to small and amateur sporting events and his legislation making Team USA athletes training for the Olympics in New York eligible for in-state tuition at SUNY and CUNY schools was signed into law by Governor Hochul this past November.
