Important Information From Assemblyman
Steven Cymbrowitz

Dear Neighbor,

Identity theft - when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes - is a growing problem. Someone’s identity is stolen every two seconds. Frightening as this sounds, there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself. I have provided several suggestions on the back of this card. Please read through them and make them part of your life. Also, you might want to call the Federal Trade Commission’s ID Theft hotline (1-877-438-4338) or read through the information on its website (ftc.gov/idtheft).

If you suspect that you are a victim of identity theft it is important that you immediately inform the police, credit reporting bureaus and your financial institutions. The FTC’s hotline and website provide information on exactly what to do. Should you have any questions about identity theft please contact my community office.

Assemblyman Cymbrowitz’
Simple Steps to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft
  • Never give out personal info (Social Security Number, Passwords, Account Numbers, etc.) to anyone unless you initiated the communication.

  • Do not carry your Social Security Card or Medicare Card around on a daily basis.

  • Do not give out your Social Security number unless absolutely required (i.e. when opening a bank account, starting a new job, etc.).

  • Shred or destroy all documents with personal information, including junk mail, before discarding.

  • Photocopy the front and back of everything in your wallet and keep the copies in a secure place.

  • Check bank and credit card statements carefully each month, if an expected bill fails to come call the company.

  • Make sure your mail is delivered to a locked mailbox.

  • Have new check orders delivered to your bank branch.

  • Check your credit report for free by either calling 1-877-322-8228 or on-line at www.annualcreditreport.com. Suggestion: Request a report from a different one of the 3 credit reporting bureaus every 4 months.
