Statement from Assemblymember Tony Simone on Medical Aid in Dying Agreement
December 18, 2026
New York will be taking a historic step rooted in compassion and dignity. I was proud to vote for the Medical Aid in Dying Act (S138/A136) and to stand with advocates, families, and colleagues who fought for years to make this possible. This law is not about ending life – it’s about easing suffering and honoring the autonomy of mentally competent, terminally ill New Yorkers.
I have personally seen loved ones endure unbearable pain at the end of life, and the helplessness that comes with knowing there are no legal options for relief. No one facing a terminal illness should be denied the ability to choose comfort, dignity, and peace on their own terms.
Thank you to Governor Hochul, and to Assemblymember Amy Paulin and Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal for their steadfast leadership. Most of all, I am grateful to the patients and families who bravely shared their stories so future generations can have better choices at life’s end.
