Senators Shelley Mayer and Nathalia Fernandez and Assembly Members Steve Otis and Amy Paulin Announce State Library Construction Grant and an Additional Million Dollars for New Rochelle Public Library

New Rochelle, NY – New York State Senators Shelley Mayer and Nathalia Fernandez and Assemblymembers Steve Otis and Amy Paulin joined the New Rochelle Public Library to announce $180,544 in a State Library Grant and an additional $1 million the four state legislators secured for capital projects to support critical improvements to the library’s infrastructure.

New Rochelle Public Library was awarded $180,544 in State Aid for Library Construction to replace the theater and entrance roofs and to renovate the multi-stack chiller needed to maintain the building’s air conditioning system. These funds are part of the $44 million allocated for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects statewide in the FY2024–2025 New York State Budget.

In addition, the four legislators each secured $250,000, totaling $1 million, to fund the replacement of the main library building’s roof. This funding was secured through the State and Municipal Facilities Grant program, which aims to improve infrastructure in our public spaces.

State Senator Shelley Mayer said, “I am proud to have secured a total of $1,180,544 in state funding, alongside my colleagues in the Legislature, to support the New Rochelle Public Library and ensure its building remains safe, welcoming, and fully accessible to the public. New Rochelle Public Library provides fantastic resources, support, and programs to residents and this funding will help guarantee that these vital services remain available to all who depend on them. Thank you to my colleagues in the State Legislature for their shared commitment to strengthening our libraries, and to Director Schatoff and the dedicated staff of the New Rochelle Public Library for their dedication to our community.”

State Senator Nathalia Fernandez said, “Libraries are the backbone of our communities, opening doors to education, opportunity, and connection for residents of all ages. This investment will ensure the New Rochelle Public Library remains a welcoming space for families, students, and neighbors who rely on its resources every day. I’m proud to work with my colleagues in Albany to deliver the funding needed to protect and strengthen this vital community institution.”

Assemblyman Steve Otis said, “As is always the case, the New Rochelle library maintains an aggressive schedule of capital improvements to enhance the experience of this valued community resource. We are very pleased to announce the award of a competitive grant from the library construction program. We also are thrilled that our New Rochelle state delegation has again combined efforts to assist the library. The New Rochelle public library provides countless resources and programs to the community throughout the year. Maintaining and improving the library's infrastructure is always an important part of that mission. Congratulations to the board, staff and patrons of the library on this continued success.”

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin said, “Libraries have always held a special place in my heart. More than buildings filled with books, they are vibrant community hubs where neighbors gather and learn. I am proud to join my colleagues in securing $1,180,544 in state funding to strengthen the New Rochelle Public Library’s infrastructure and ensure it remains safe and accessible to all. As a proud New Rochelle resident, I have always been, and will always be, a strong supporter of our libraries and the essential role they play in our community.”

Eugenia Schatoff, New Rochelle Public Library Executive Director, said, “We are incredibly grateful to Senator Mayer, Senator Fernandez, Assemblymember Otis, and Assemblymember Paulin for their strong support of the New Rochelle Public Library. This funding allows us to make critical infrastructure improvements that will protect our building and ensure a safe, welcoming space for our community for years to come. It’s an important investment in the future of our Library and the residents of New Rochelle.”
