Pheffer Amato Gets NYC Corrections and Sanitation 20-Year Retirement Plan

Albany, NY New York State Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato obtained an incredible accomplishment when the NYS Assembly passed her bill, A.6942, which would implement a 20-year retirement plan for NYC Correction Officers and NYC Sanitation Workers. The change impacts those hired after July 2012 and aligns them with the pension plan of their co-workers who were hired prior to that date, respectively.

“Our correctional officers work under demanding circumstances where they maintain facilities and supervise some of the worst offenders and criminals; and our amazing sanitation workers are out there every day, rain or shine, keeping our streets and neighborhoods clean and litter-free. These incredible governmental employees exemplify an unwavering commitment to the City. I am proud to continue my work of making sure we recognize them and give them the benefits they deserve,” said Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato.

“On behalf of the men and women who risk their lives maintaining safety and security in NYC jails, COBA would like to thank the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Employees, Stacey Pheffer Amato, and the rest of the Assemblymembers who voted unanimously to pass a critical piece of legislation that restores the 20-year retirement benefit for our correction officers. We urge the bill to be sent to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law,” said Benny Boscio Jr., President of COBA (Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association).

Dennis Schock, President of NYC Sanitationmen's’ Association, IBT Local 831, said, “On behalf of our 7,200 members and 8,000 retirees, thank you Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato! This legislation recognizes the toil that lifting an average of 14 tons a day in all types of weather takes on the human body. This is an important step to repair the pension diminishment caused by Tier Six. We look forward to the approval by the Governor.”

Pheffer Amato has proven to be a fighter for pension equity for public employees as she recently secured a 20-year pension plan during the 2025 State Budget for members of the NYPD. The bill is being carried by NYS Senator Robert Jackson, S.6486.
