Statement The City Council Casino Vote

Assemblymember Novakhov Speaks Out Against the Coney Island Casino

Brooklyn, New York, July 1st - On Monday, June 30th the New York City Council decided to vote in favor of moving forward the casino bid in Coney Island known as the Coney. This procedural vote sets a dangerous precedent for the city and runs counter to addressing the needs of South Brooklyn.

“While Coney Island is an entertainment heritage site it is also and most importantly home to tens of thousands of families,” said Assemblyman Novakhov “Recent events this past week on the boardwalk and on our beaches show that what is most needed for South Brooklyn is for the City to deliver public safety and improve our quality of life and that does not include a resort casino. During beach season emergency services struggle to get through crippling traffic, with a year- round casino our infrastructure and emergency services would crumble. The priorities are wrong.”
