Simpson: Omnibus Bill Fails to Address HALT Act, Staffing and Overtime Issues
Majority-drafted omnibus bill on correction reform fails to address concerns raised by COs
Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Adirondack) voted “No” on the Majority’s omnibus bill (A.8871), a hollow attempt at corrections reform that fails correctional officers. These dedicated men and women risked their livelihoods in the largest strike the state has seen in decades, desperately seeking relief from grueling conditions. Yet, this legislation ignores their core concerns.
“I am disappointed to see the HALT Act, which has endangered officers and inmates alike, remain untouched,” said Simpson who is the sponsor for a HALT Act repealer. “This bill sidesteps critical staffing shortages, leaving facilities dangerously understaffed. Most glaringly, it fails to address the inhumane practice of mandatory overtime. We are seeing officers work triple shifts, eroding their health and family lives. This so-called reform offers no protections or meaningful change for staff.
“The concerns raised by our COs are noticeably omitted from this bill. Mandatory staffing requirements and overtime limits to ensure safe prisons and fair treatment are nowhere to be found. I stand with our correctional officers, both those still serving and those wrongfully terminated. I will fight relentlessly for real reforms that prioritize their well-being,” Simpson concluded.
