Slater Bill Honoring Yorktown Police Lieutenant Passed By Lawmakers
Assemblyman Matt Slater’s (R,C-Yorktown) legislation (A.3288), naming a portion of route 202 in the town of Yorktown the “Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway” in honor of the tragic loss of Kenneth Sgroi, was passed on Monday, June 5, 2023. Yorktown Police Lieutenant Kenneth Sgroi was only 37 years old when an abrupt illness took his life. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain in honor of his dedication and tremendous service to the department.
“Captain Kenneth Sgroi was an exemplary law enforcement officer who possessed a strong sense of dedication towards his community and this legislation contributes to honoring his devotion to the Yorktown community. Yorktown lost one of its finest members the day he passed and it is important we remember the selfless commitment he made to protect and serve. I am incredibly grateful my fellow colleagues have supported me in this piece of legislation and along with his wife and children he is survived by a piece of Yorktown,” said Slater.
“I was deeply saddened by the loss of Captain Sgroi, whose substantive, important work in Yorktown was exemplary and benefited the entire community,” said Harckham. “Our law enforcement professionals rarely get the recognition and praise they deserve, but with this bill we intend to honor his memory, his kindness and his tremendous service.”
“Kenny loved Yorktown. He purchased a house and intended to raise his young family in the town that he took an oath to protect and serve. That his legacy will live on by naming this section of Route 202, the section he drove each day to and from work each day, is quite meaningful to all of us at YPD. We love and miss him, but his contributions to our community will never be forgotten. I give so much thanks to Assemblyman Slater and Sen. Harckham for making this happen,” said Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble.
“Kenny Sgroi was a beloved member of the Yorktown Police Department. After his death, we resolved to keep his memory alive through charitable works and other meaningful ways. The Sgroi Memorial Highway is a fitting commemoration for someone who selflessly served our community,” said Supervisor Tom Diana.
