Assemblymember Eachus Joins Speaker Heastie for Visits to Community Organizations

Assemblymember Chris Eachus (D-New Windsor) welcomed Speaker Carl Heastie to the 99th Assembly District this week as part of Heastie’s annual statewide tour. They toured the facilities of Abilities First and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, witnessing firsthand the critical roles of these organizations in our community.

“It’s always encouraging to meet with those who are working for a more just society and helping uplift vulnerable community members,” Eachus said. “The people we met today have dedicated their careers to empowering people with disabilities or ensuring equal access to the legal system. Hardworking and committed organizations like Abilities First and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley are crucial to uplifting everyone in our community. I thank Speaker Heastie for his continued support of groups like these here in the Hudson Valley and across the state.”

Eachus secured past funding to complete much-needed roof repairs at the Strauss Family Pavilion in New Windsor, which houses both organizations. In this year’s state budget, Eachus helped secure funding to continue supporting Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. He also helped secure a $25,000 state grant to support Abilities First’s new app, Abilibee, that helps families navigate New York’s developmental disability services.

Legal Services of the Hudson Valley provides free representation to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer. The organization is committed to protecting rights and promoting equal justice for marginalized and disadvantaged communities. They are a critical source of support for domestic violence survivors, senior citizens, LGBTQ+ rights, veterans and military families, and disability advocacy.

Abilities First offers day services, employment support, residential and family help, and clinical resources to children and adults with disabilities. The not-for-profit organization serves roughly 1,500 people with various developmental disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health conditions.
