Santabarbara Highlights Passed School-Zone Speed Camera Bill Connected to Back-to-School Safety in Schenectady

A new bill sponsored by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (A7669), passed by the Legislature last session, gives the City of Schenectady the authority to launch a pilot program for school-zone speed cameras – a step forward in protecting students as the new school year begins. The program allows up to 20 school zones, including high school areas, to be covered and is currently awaiting the Governor’s signature.

“Back-to-School Week is a time filled with excitement, but also responsibility,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “As the sponsor of this bill, I wanted to make sure Schenectady has the ability to put a powerful tool in place to keep drivers accountable and ensure that the areas around our schools are safe places for kids to learn, grow, and succeed.”

“Every parent wants to know their child is safe when they step off the bus or cross the street to get to class,” Assemblyman Santabarbara added. “This bill reflects that commitment and sends a clear message: protecting children comes first.”

 Program Highlights:

  • Creates a pilot program for school-zone speed cameras in Schenectady.
  • Allows up to 20 school zones, including high school areas, to be covered.
  • Sets a five-year timeframe to measure results and effectiveness.

Assemblyman Santabarbara urged drivers to use Back-to-School Week as a reminder to slow down in school zones:

“School is back in session – let’s all do our part to keep students safe. Slowing down is a simple step that protects lives.”
