Santabarbara Delivers Nearly $1M for Proctors Theatre in State Budget – a Major Win for Schenectady’s Downtown

One of upstate New York’s most iconic theaters is getting a major boost – thanks to nearly $1 million in funding secured by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara in the newly enacted state budget.

Proctors Theatre in downtown Schenectady will receive $968,000 through the “Alive Downtowns!” initiative, a targeted effort to reinvigorate historic venues that serve as anchors for local economies and the arts.

“This is more than a grant—it’s an investment in the heartbeat of our city,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “Proctors has been at the center of Schenectady’s downtown revival, and this funding helps ensure its stage stays bright, its doors stay open, and its impact keeps growing.”

The funding comes at a time when many arts organizations are still recovering from pandemic- era disruptions. For Proctors, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, the new investment helps sustain programming, jobs, and foot traffic that fuels local restaurants, hotels, and shops.

Assemblyman Santabarbara added, “Historic theaters like Proctors don’t just entertain – they bring people downtown, they support local business, they teach our kids, and they tell our stories. I’m proud to fight for funding that keeps the arts alive and our downtowns thriving.”

“This funding could not come at a better time,” said Philip Morris, CEO of Proctors Collaborative. “As we continue to recover and rebuild from the challenges of the past few years, this investment helps us sustain the vibrant programming and educational outreach that make Proctors a cornerstone of our community. We’re deeply grateful to Assemblyman Santabarbara for championing the arts and recognizing the vital role Proctors plays in downtown Schenectady’s continued resurgence.”
