Statement from Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, Chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus, on the Indictments Unsealed in the Robert Brooks Murder Case

“While chaos is brewing across state correctional facilities, we will not allow the death of Robert Brooks to be overshadowed. His name is known because we witnessed it, but we recognize the many others whose stories have been silenced and hidden. The crisis in our correctional system is undeniable, and at its core are the inhumane conditions that continue to claim the lives of New Yorkers in custody.

There is no excuse for using a position of power to murder or abuse New Yorkers in custody. The unsealed indictments in the Robert Brooks case are a step in the right direction. However, we have seen indictments before, but justice is only served when the system follows through – when accountability is upheld and real change prevents future tragedies. Our focus as a Caucus is clear, and we are determined to implement lasting reform.”
