Area legislators commemorate raceway’s 65th Anniversary with Assembly Proclamation
Sen. Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) and Assemblyman Christopher S. Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) were pleased to welcome a delegation from Watkins Glen International (WGI) on the occasion of its 65th Anniversary. The legislators presented Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup with a Proclamation commemorating the raceway’s anniversary and espousing its sterling contributions to the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions.
“It was a tremendous honor to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Watkins Glen International (WGI) at the state capitol this week with WGI officials and drivers from the Rolex Tudor United Sports Car Series. Watkins Glen International is a world-class organization that attracts more than half-a-million people annually. Fans from across North America have flocked to the track, providing a $200 million economic impact to our region and a lasting contribution to our culture,” said the lawmakers in a joint statement. “We would also like to thank Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup for his steadfast leadership and commitment to our community.”
Watkins Glen International hosted its inaugural race in 1948. A historic contest, it was the first road race held in the U.S. after World War II. Watkins Glen now hosts many exciting racing events, including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. It is the largest single sporting event in New York State.
